Lydgate Farms: best for chocolate lovers

A three-hour tour of a working cacao farm near Kapaa, from pods on the tree and fresh cacao fruit to a long tasting of the farm's own chocolate.

Lydgate's beans were named among the world's best at the Cacao of Excellence awards in 2017, 2021 and 2023, and the family has farmed on Kauai since 1865. It is $145, gratuities not included, for ages 9 and up, with up to 25 guests. Guests report plenty of chocolate, and one found it a little long.

Moloa'a fruit farm: best for tropical fruit

A two-hour pick and taste tour of a nearly 30-acre organic farm near Kilauea, where you taste whatever you pick.

Groups are capped at 10 and the tour meets at 10 AM behind a roadside fruit stand. You need your own car, because most taxis will not drive the dirt road to the farm. There is no chocolate, but guests report jackfruit, soursop, sapodilla and more. It is $119.

Private food tour or a sightseeing day with a tasting?

Take the private food tour for a tasting walk with your own group; take the small-group sightseeing day if you have no car and want waterfalls with an optional chocolate tasting.

The private food tour ($125, 4 hours) changes town by day of the week, from Kilauea to Hanapepe and Lihue, and some guests felt there were too few stops. The sightseeing day ($195, 5.5 hours) picks up in Kapaa or Lihue and visits Wailua Falls, Opaekaa Falls and Kapaa town, with the chocolate tasting free but optional.
